"Look Inward- Reach Outward"
The continued worldwide economic flux has affected each of us individually as we experience restructuring in the workplace and in our professional organizations.
AAOHN has experienced a 50% decrease in membership and program attendance since 1999 and this has contributed to the need to turn over the management of AAOHN to the full service
management company, Dancy, Callan & Associates. The AAOHN Board of Directors goal is to regain economic strength, continue the organizational vision, enhance organizational transparency
and meet the professional and educational needs of its members.
At the Minnesota level, we have also experienced declining membership, but the Board of Directors is glad to report that MAOHN has been able to adjust its budget and
currently has a balanced budget to date. Our goal is to maintain the balanced budget for the following year. Your continued membership and program attendance is a crucial component of
this goal.
As your MAOHN President, I extend an invitation to all of our current and lapsed members to "look inward." Take a moment for introspection to think of why you chose
to become an occupational health nurse and joined MAOHN. Take a minute to reflect on a time when your interaction at meetings, online or at national conferences with members has
enhanced your skills and made you feel proud to be an OHN!
Whatever personal feelings you experience when you "looked inward" is the motivation that we need to now "reach outward" and maintain the infrastructure of our
organization at the state and national level. If you are currently a member, I thank you for your support. If you are not a member, please join today. If you know of a colleague
who is lapsed in their membership, reach out to them and invite them to once again join. Don't forget to personally invite those new to our field to attend our local meetings and
join our organization. It is only through the strength of membership that our organization can continue with excellent educational programming, remain focused on worker health,
safety & wellness issues and address governmental policy issues in the field of occupational and environmental health.
My personal challenge to each member for 2009-2010 is to remain active in MAOHN and to recruit one new member. Invite a co-worker to attend our meetings, network
with membership and enhance the strength of our professional organization.
In closing I want to thank you for your support of this great organization and your commitment to the profession of occupational and environmental health nursing.
