Beyond Green Architecture: How Cutting Edge Environmental Design Benefits the Health and Safety of Workers - The Great River
Energy Experience
We have all heard about how companies are looking at minimizing their impact on the environment but it isn't often that
an energy company actually puts this into practice. Great River Energy decided to be an example of minimizing energy usage in the community
during the design and construction of their new corporate headquarters in Maple Grove, Minnesota. The goal was to follow the guidelines of the
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System — a set of criteria established by the U.S. Green Building
Council (USGBC) to encourage and accelerate global adoption of sustainable green building design and practices. LEED is a third party
certification program and the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings.
Following a tour of the Great River Energy facility, the panel presentation will explain the obvious environmental advantages of
green design and construction along with how this design affects the health and safety of building occupants. Panel members will present science and
practice based associations between employee health and productivity with good indoor air quality, low emitting material components, individual workstation
thermal and ventilation control and the use of exterior views, natural daylight and task lighting. They will discuss the design strategies and techniques
they have used to boost productivity and worker satisfaction while improving energy efficiency at the same time. After this presentation, participants
will be able to:
- Describe employee wellness benefits from green workplace building design and construction.
- Discuss relationships between worker productivity and green architectural components.
- Relate specific workplace design strategies that can result in increased employee health and wellness.
